It aims to help applicants, particularly from Iraq and other non-UK countries, understand which visa applies to their situation—whether they are school students, university applicants, or short-term learners—and what evidence they must prepare before applying.
Visa Route Options, Age Brackets, and Required Documents
1. Child Student Visa
For applicants aged 4 to 17 years old studying at an independent or private school.
Age Differences
- Under 16 years old:
- Stay permitted up to 6 years or the course length, plus 4 months
- Not allowed to work
- Must have care arrangements in the UK and written parental consent
- Ages 16–17:
- Stay permitted up to 3 years or the course length, plus 4 months
- May work up to 10 hours per week in term time and full-time in holidays
- Can apply under either the Child Student or Student Visa route, depending on course type
Required Documents
- Valid passport or travel document
- Unconditional offer from a licensed independent school
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the school
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living costs
- Written parental or guardian consent for visa, travel, and living arrangements
- Proof of relationship with parent or guardian
- Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate if applicable
- Evidence of care or accommodation arrangements in the UK
- Certified translations of documents not in English
Dependants are not allowed under this route.
2. Student Visa (Student Route)
For applicants aged 16 and above studying at further or higher education institutions. There is no upper age limit.
Key Conditions
- For degree-level or higher study, stay is usually up to 5 years
- For courses below degree level, stay is usually up to 2 years
- Part-time work is permitted within the allowed limits
- Dependants can accompany postgraduate or government-sponsored students
Required Documents
- Valid passport or travel document
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the university or college
- Proof of financial support for course fees and living costs (bank statements or sponsor letter)
- English language proof such as IELTS or another UKVI-approved test
- Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate if required
- ATAS certificate for specific sensitive postgraduate subjects
- Proof of parental consent if aged 16 or 17
- Certified translations for non-English documents
- Sponsorship or scholarship confirmation if applicable
3. Short-term Study and Visitor Routes
Short-term Study Visa
- For English language courses lasting between 6 and 11 months
- Applicants must be aged 16 or older
- No work is permitted
- Cannot switch to a Student Visa while in the UK
Required Documents:
- Valid passport
- Proof of acceptance from a recognised language school
- Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay and travel
- Proof of accommodation and return flight booking
- TB test certificate if applicable
Standard Visitor Visa
- For short study courses lasting up to 6 months
- Available to applicants of all ages

- Proof of financial means and return travel
